Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 earlier on today for both side's first league meeting of the current season.

Kaizer Chiefs welcomed the defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns today at a packed FNB stadium with more than 83 000 fans making it to the stadium.

Both teams made 1 change each from mid-week wins with Chiefs bringing in Edson Castillo for Njabulo Blom while Sundowns brought in club captain Themba Zwane for Aubrey Modiba.

There was still no place for Teboho Mokoena in today's match day squad. Khuliso Mudau started on the bench after missing all 4 previous matches for Sundowns.

The match started on a high tempo  with the away side Sundowns looking more threatening in the opening 5 minutes. It was Chiefs striker Ranga Chivaviro who opened the scoring in the 9th minute.

Sundowns almost found an equalizer in the 15th minute when Iqraam Rayners shot went wide from Lucas Ribeiro's cut back

The visitors went on to get their equalizer in the 30th minutes via Ribeiro after picking up a pass from Tashreeq Matthews.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari was called into action 3 minutes later by Reveiro's 35 meter long range shot which he pushed away for a corner.

Sundowns got their second goal in the 37th minutes via Iqraam Rayners who fired a low shot past Ntwari.

The match went into the half time break with Mamelodi Sundowns having a 2-1 lead.

Chiefs opened the second half searching for an equalizer and Chivaviro almost found his second and Chiefs equalizer but his 58th minute shot sky-rocketed on the side of Ronwen Williams net.

Ronwen Williams was called to make a close range save from Edson Castillo's header in the 62nd minute.

Chiefs substitute Ashley Dupreez came close to an equalizer in the 67th minute but his effort was blocked after he came 1 on 1 with Williams.

Another bullet header from Castillo was saved from close range by Williams in the 80th minute.

The match ended with 'Bafana ba style' winning by 2-1 and sealing all 3 points.
