The 20-year old defender came from the Manchester United youth ranks having been with the development structures from 2017 to date.

With the competition on the left-back position, United saw it fit to release the youngster for a team that is going to guarantee him a regular playing time.

Below is part of the statement published on the Manchester United website yesterday announcing departure of Murray:

"Sam Murray has signed for Carlisle United, after his contract expired at Manchester United."

"The full-back was a regular in our Under-21s side last term, making 15 appearances in total, and scoring in the Premier League 2 play-off victory over West Ham United last month."

"As he was available on a free transfer, the defender has been snapped up by Carlisle, who were unable to avoid relegation to the National League but are already rated among the favourites to win that division and bounce straight back up."

"Sam was involved in first-team games on tour, including this one against Arsenal."

"Murray has played at Brunton Park in the past, in the EFL Trophy, coming on as a half-time substitute for Tyler Fredricson in a 2-1 win for the Reds. Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho both started the 2022 tie, while Charlie McNeill and Omari Forson scored the goals."

"The 20-year-old could make his debut for his new club in the pre-season friendly against Motherwell on 8 July."

"Best of luck to Sam for the future, we will be following your progress closely."
